This fifth volume in the series Double Exposure series presents over fifty images of African Americans in uniform, from the Civil War to the War in Iraq. This selection of photographs illustrates stories of patriotism, courage, and dignity, and explores the lives and challenges of African Americans in the U.S. military.

Photographers include Anthony Barboza, a staff photographer in the U.S. Navy, Henry Clay Anderson who studied photography at Southern University under the G.I. Bill, and Robert Scurlock whose famous photographs of the Tuskegee Airmen still live with us today. The photographs are accompanied by detailed and extended captions and are enriched by the unique perspective of Charles F. Bolden, Jr., former administrator of NASA and Gail Lumet Buckley author of American Patriots.

Double Exposure is a dynamic series based on the notable photography collection supporting the Earl W. and Amanda Stafford Center for African American Media Arts at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
