Throughout history, dogs have carried an emotional bond with humans and embodied trust, loyalty, and friendship, leading many artists to immortalise these treasured companions in their own work. Faithful and Fearless: Portraits of Dogs features 50 works of art depicting dogs whose owners include members of the British royal family as well as the artists themselves. Well-known works include Gainsborough’s Tristram and Fox, Lucian Freud’s portrayal of Pluto, his pet whippet, and David’s Hockney’s paintings of his dachshunds Stanley and Boodgie.

A contribution by Bruce Fogle and an essay by the museum’s director Xavier Bray explore topics such as the relationship between dog and owner and allegorical imagery of dogs used as metaphors for the human condition. The pieces, drawn from major British collections including the V&A, Tate Britain, the British Museum, and a wealth of regional museums and private collections, are arranged by theme: the Aristocratic Dog, the Royal Dog, the Artist’s Dog, the Heroic Dog, the Allegorical Dog, Until Death and the Dog Immortal.

The accompanying exhibition opens at The Wallace Collection, London, in April 2021.
