Tuesday 13 December 2016‘Heroes and trailblazers’: more remarkable photographs from the National Museum of African American History and Culture

Fighting for Freedom Fighting for Freedom Gail Lumet Buckley and Charles F Bolden, Jr. Foreword by Lonnie G. Bunch III

“With these startling images, we can envision our own history anew”—Major General Charles F. Bolden Jr., USMC Retired

This fifth volume in the series Double Exposure presents over fifty images of African Americans in uniform, from the Civil War to the war in Iraq. This selection of photographs illustrates stories of patriotism, courage, and dignity, and explores the lives and challenges of African Americans in the U.S. military.

Photographers include Anthony Barboza, a staff photographer in the U.S. Navy; Henry Clay Anderson who studied photography at Southern University under the G.I. Bill, and Robert Scurlock whose famous photographs of the Tuskegee Airmen still live with us today. The photographs are accompanied by detailed and extended captions and are enriched by the unique perspective of Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Administrator of NASA and Gail Lumet Buckley author of American Patriots.
