D Giles Limited is a specialist visual publisher, based in central London. The company supplies integrated book publishing and electronic/digital publishing products and services to museums and galleries.

Imprints and Activities

Publishing under the imprint of GILES, the company focuses on co-publishing for museums, galleries, and a range of specialist institutions, including major research libraries. The core list comprises exhibition catalogues, permanent collection titles, souvenir and visitor guides with an emphasis on modern and contemporary art, fine and decorative art, architecture, photography and history. Clients include American Federation of Arts, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Arts, The Frick Collection, New York, Hillwood Museum, Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, The Library of Congress, Mint Museum, Charlotte, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Foundation for the National Archives, Washington, D.C., National Air & Space Museum, National Gallery of Art, Washington, New-York Historical Society, the Olympic Foundation for Culture and Heritage, Toledo Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Walters Art Museum.

GILES provides specialist editorial, translation, design, colour origination and pre-press services; printing and press management; international sales, marketing and distribution. Throughout, the emphasis is on the quality and accessibility of the finished product. GILES is actively engaged in developing both web-based and portable electronic/digital content, coming out its print book materials. These include web sites for the Library of Congress, and apps for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, Detroit Institute of Arts, Brooklyn Museum and Freer|Sackler Gallery.

Distribution and Marketing

GILES has fully developed distribution arrangements both in the USA and UK, Europe and Rest of World. Alongside more traditional arrangements, GILES has developed a robust direct sales operation targeting sales to specialist niche markets, including academic ones.

Publishing Team

Dan Giles, Managing Director

Dan has over 20 years experience in art and museum publishing, and is a specialist in commissioning, producing and marketing illustrated colour visitor guides, exhibition catalogues and collection titles to international museums and galleries. He has worked in the US museum and gallery market since 1994. Since 2003 he has been Managing Director of GILES, a company he established, with specific responsibility for developing the company’s museum and gallery publishing and electronic publishing programme.

Sarah McLaughlin, Production Director

Sarah has over 20 years experience of 4-colour book production, both in trade fiction and non-fiction. She worked for HarperCollins as a Senior Production Controller, where she was responsible for managing the production over 30 titles a year. As Production Manager for Scala Publishers and then at Phaidon Press Sarah was responsible for the production of each company’s entire art title list.

Louise Ramsay, Production Manager

Louise has managed production in the creative arts sector for over 20 years. She joined GILES in February 2016. Prior to this she was Head of Print & Design for Tate, and managed print production for clients including Phaidon Press, Thames & Hudson, the British Museum and the V&A.

Allison McCormick, Managing Editor

Allison has over 20 years’ experience in international publishing. She has worked as a writer and editor for US companies Time Life and McGraw Hill and has been working at D Giles Ltd for seven years co-ordinating and managing projects.

Pat Barylski, Editorial Manager 

Pat has over 25 years publishing experience, including being Series Editor for the Art & Ideas series at Phaidon Press, also a Deputy Editor for the Grove Dictionary of Art, and Managing Editor at City & Guilds. She has also worked for a number US publishers, including Time Life Books, Holt, Rinehart & Winston, and Scholastic. Pat is responsible for day-to-day editorial and design issues connected with book projects.

Liz Japes, Sales and Marketing Manager

Before joining the company in January 2007, Liz worked for 10 years for one of the UK’s leading retail companies, Debenhams Plc, as an assistant merchandiser. Liz is responsible for all the sales, marketing and PR work on our titles.
